Power BI Connector

Official connector for seamless integration of GBM data into your BI tool. Installation in just a few minutes.

System Requirements

Power BI Desktop (Version 2.0 or higher)
Windows 10/11 or macOS (with Power BI Desktop)
Active GBM API key (Professional Tier or higher)
Internet connection for data refresh

Installation: Step by Step

Download Connector

Download the .mez file:

The .mez file is a Power BI Custom Connector that enables the connection to the GBM API.

Install Connector

Copy the .mez file to the Custom Connectors folder:

C:\Users\[YourUsername]\Documents\Power BI Desktop\Custom Connectors\
Note: If the "Custom Connectors" folder does not exist, create it manually.

Adjust Security Settings

Enable Custom Connectors in Power BI Desktop:

  1. Open Power BI Desktop
  2. Go to File → Options and Settings → Options
  3. Select Security in the left menu
  4. Under "Data Extensions" select "(Not Recommended) Allow any extension to load without validation or warning"
  5. Click OK
  6. Restart Power BI Desktop
Security note: This setting allows loading Custom Connectors. Only load connectors from trusted sources.

Establish Connection

Connect to the GBM API:

  1. Click Get Data
  2. Click "More..."
  3. Scroll or search for "GBM API"
  4. Select Power BI GBM API Connector
  5. Click Connect
  6. If prompted, enter your API key
  7. Enter "https://gbmapi.bl2020.com" as the baseURL
  8. Click OK

Load Data Series

The connector provides three functions:

  • View all existing data series as a table
  • Query a single data series as a function
  • Query multiple data series as a function

To load multiple data series (example):

  1. Click Transform Data
  2. The Power Query Editor opens, a query is created and a table is displayed.
  3. Click "Function" in the "Multiple Series" row in the "Data" column
  4. Enter query parameters, e.g. 57,58,59 for "seriesids", DE,AT,CH for "countries", 2020 for "startyear" and 2025 for "endyear"
  5. Click OK
  6. Click Close & Apply

Troubleshooting

Connector Not Displayed

  • Verify the .mez file is in the correct folder
  • Make sure Power BI Desktop has been restarted
  • Check the security settings (Step 3)

Authentication Error

  • Verify your API key is correct
  • Ensure your API key has not expired
  • Check if your tier allows Power BI access (Professional+)

Data Not Updating

  • Click "Refresh" in Power BI
  • Check your internet connection
  • Verify you have not reached your rate limit
  • For Power BI Service: Configure a gateway for scheduled refreshes
